Building on the momentum established from last
week’s teaser, in which Lightning McQueen was seen revving his
engines in the face of Jackson Storm, this all-new promo is designed to
chronicle the bitter rivalry between the two. Now fast approaching his twilight
years on the race course, Owen Wilson’s
iconic red stock car is written off as a washed-up champion by the time Cars 3 opens, and it’s Armie Hammer’s arrogant Storm that seizes control of that vacuum to
become the talk of the circuit.
It’s essentially about the closest thing an
automobile will get to a mid-life crisis and in Cars 3, McQueen will be nudged back on the road
to recovery by Cruz Ramirez an overly enthusiastic racer that ignites a
comeback story. It’s this arc that will underpin Brian Fee’s animated threequel
and here, the director shares some insight into McQueen’s outlook now that he’s
been knocked from his perch.
“McQueen is
not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1. He’s in the
middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your
whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s
looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the
fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be
able to do forever.”
Look for Cars 3 to
screech into theaters on June 16, 2017.
