Venus Williams Cries In Press Conference

Sister of Serena Williams, Venus Williams advanced to the second round at Wimbledon with a 7-6 6-4 win over Belgium's Elise Mertens, and gave an emotional press conference after the match.

The American build-up to the tournament has been overshadowed by the news that she is being investigated amid claims she was involved in a car crash which led to the death of a driver. Having beaten Mertens, she took to the media room at the All-England Club where questions centred around the incident in Florida which happened on June 9.

She said “Life, you can't prepare for everything. I can prepare for matches and what opponents will throw at you. But I have no idea what tomorrow will bring, there are no words to describe how devastating. I'm completely speechless.”

Williams will face China's Qiang Wang in the second round.
