The Top 6 twins in football

From the Arsenal defence to the Napalo attack, we are sure to find two a twin. Watching football and seeing two identical players? Yeah, it's wonderful as these players are the current active twin footballers.  

6. Kieran Gibbs and Jaydon Gibbs

The Gibbs twins started off playing for the Croydon Schools when their manager, David O'Brien, when O'Brien was asked about who he thinks would make it to the EPL first out of the two, he confidently predicted that the youngest of the Gibbs brothers would become a Premier League star, they were both 13 years old then.

Not quite long, both were called to trials with Arsenal, but only Kieran was picked as Jaydon wasn't picked and he spent six months at Leyton Orient. Kieran started as winger but he now plays as a left back while his brother Jaydon started as a striker but now plays as a right back.  

Currently Kieran plays for Arsenal and Jaydon plays for Dover Athletic after he signed from Aldershot in August 2015.

5. Vasili Berezutski and Aleksei Berezutski

The twins are both defenders who currently play for CSKA Moscow having started their career with Torpedo-ZIL. Aleksei joined them in 2001 while Vasili joined CSKA in 2002.

Aleksei had scored the first goal for CSKA in the final of the 2005 UEFA Cup final against Sporting as they came from behind to win the game.

Internationally they have both represented Russia consistently throughout their playing career but due to injuries. Aleksie was only able to represent Russia 5 times but Vasili to this day from 2003 has 91 caps to his name and was named the team captain for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the absence of Roman Shirokov.

4. Dmitri Kombarov and Kirill Kombarov

Kombarov twins are another pair of twins from Russia. Dmitri and Kirill started playing football at the age of 4.

In 1993, Kirill and his brother Dmitri joined the Spartak Moscow football academy. After a conflict with the school coaches, the brothers left Spartak and joined the Dynamo Moscow academy in 2010.

Dmitri plays on the left wing as a full back or as a winger while his brother plays in similar positions on the right side. Dmitri has had a far more successful playing career and has represented Russia 37 times so far while his brother has struggled for playing time at Spartak and moved to Torpedo Moscow on loan this season. Kirill has never represented Russia internationally.

3. Hamit Altintop and Halil Altintop

The Turkish Internationals have played for several clubs during their career and Hamit has played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

They were both born in Germany and hence started their career with local German club Wattenscheid, for whom they played till 2003.

Hamit is a midfielder while Halil is a striker. They both left boyhood club Wattenscheid 09 in 2003, as each got a better contract with German club sides.

Hamit got signed to Bundesliga giants Schalke, while Halil was signed to Kaiserslautern, but eventually Halil joined his brother Hamit at Schalke in 2006. The brothers played together for one year before Hamit moved to Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2007.

Hamit played four seasons at Bayern and then moved on a free transfer again and this time to Real Madrid, but he played very few matches for the Spanish club, played 5 and scored one goal, he later left to join Turkish giants Galatasaray in 2012, for which he still plays.

Halil played for Schalke after his brother left till 2010 before moving to Eintracht Frankfurt, then later to Tabzonspor and now he plays for FC Augsburg. They have both represented Turkey at the International stage from 2004.

2. Jose Callejon and Juanmi Callejon

The twins started their youth career with Real Madrid and left the club in 2008 without making an appearance for the first team. Jose is a Striker and sometimes plays as a winger; Juanmi on the other side is a Midfielder. Jose was sold to Espanyol after he couldn't force his way into the first team, his twin Juanmi also left as he signed for Mallorca. In 2011, After Jose had played three seasons for Espanyol, He was bought back by Real Madrid for £5.5m and spent two seasons at the Madrid club while winning the La Liga in the process. He was later sold in the 2013-14 season, he left Real and joined Napoli and has had a very good career with the Italian club winning the Coppa Italia in his first season and also won superCoppa Italia in 2014. And recently earned a call-up to the Spain National team. As for Juanmi, things didn’t work out as he would have wished to after leaving Real in 2008. He made one appearance for Mallorca and was loaned out to Albacete in the second division for the very next season. After which he joined Cordoba in 2010 and then Greek side Hercules in 2011. Juanmi didn’t find his feet in Greece as well even though he moved from Hercules to Levadiakos in 2013. He currently plays for Bolivian side Club Bolivar.

1. Rafael da Silva and Fabio da Silva

The twins earned world recognition with there famous move to Manchester United in 2008 from Brazilian side Fluminense. It is rumored that Arsenal had invited them to one of their training  without the permission of Fluminense, but their mother persuaded them to show respect to Fluminense.

Rafael plays primarily as a right-back and can also play in the midfield but started off as a striker at an amateur side Boa Esperança, in Brazil, while Fabio has been deployed on either flanks as a full back, he also started as a defensive midfielder at an  amateur side Boa Esperança, in Brazil, but after he made a switch to Fluminense, he was converted to a left back. They made their Manchester United debut in 2008, the twins moved to Manchester in January 2008 without ever having played for the Fluminense first team. Fabio was the first to get an International call up for Brazil in 2011 and has represented them twice while Rafael had to wait till 2012 to get his all up and he too has played for Brazil twice. On 3 August 2015, Rafael joined French club Lyon on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee, his brother Fabio currently plays for Cardiff City after a loan spell with QPR in the 2012-13 season and was later sold in 2014 to Cardiff City.
