Drogba, who
has a year left on his deal in Canada, sat alongside the 69-year-old Dutchman
during Saturday’s victory over Sunderland
and Hiddink told Dutch newspaper De
Telegraaf that “I want Didier Drogba on my staff. It’s important to
have these club icons working for you. The only problem is that he has a
contract in Montreal”.
Hiddink had
been in contact with Roman Abramovich
as early as last Monday when it was only on Monday night that Chelsea lost to Leicester in the game that appeared to
seal Jose Mourinho’s fate. “My first contact with Abramovich was on
Monday. He said: “Do you want to help us?” I always help my
friends and I have very good memories of the club. Now it’s time to talk and to
look at what the big problems are and to work on the team every day. It will be
a busy period but I am looking forward to it”.
Hiddink said
he also spoke to Chelsea’s players on Saturday and again on Sunday. “I had my
first talks with the players on Saturday and Sunday too”. Hiddink left his job
as Holland manager in July with the national side struggling in their Euro 2016
qualifying group. They subsequently failed to reach next summer’s finals in
France.
