Joss Whedon Won’t Rule Out Helming Black Widow Movie

Joss Whedon proved instrumental during the formative years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, helming both Avengers and its sequel Age of Ultron in the space of three years. How and ever, Whedon’s experience on the latter blockbuster was enough to drive him away from the MCU, citing studio red tape and the sheer weight of expectation that comes hand-in-hand with helming a Marvel tentpole.

It appears Whedon could circle back to the realm of costumed heroes on one condition – if it involves Scarlett Johansson’s former SHIELD operative, Black Widow. Word comes by way of IGN, who quizzed the beloved filmmaker regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, specifically, what it would take for Whedon to take the reins on a new superhero flick.

Whedon said “I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound, so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your ‘Superman’ territory it’s harder to maintain the gritty action that the Russo brothers do so brilliantly and she’s got that kind of thing and [you can] really do a spy thriller. Like really do a good, paranoid, ‘John le Carré on crack’ sort of thing. That would be really fun.”
