Mutiu Adepoju, a former Nigeria international, has
said that the Super Eagles 2-1 away win against Zambia did not come as a
surprise to him as he predicted a Nigerian victory. The Eagles got off to a
winning start in Group B, securing their first ever win on Zambian soil.
A goal each
from Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho gave Nigeria a 2-0
first half lead and with less than 20 minutes remaining, Collins Mbesuma grabbed a goal back for Zambia to end the game 2-1.
Adepoju
expressed his delight that the Eagles were able to start on a winning note, he
said “I was very optimistic prior to the
game, with the right attitude and preparation of the players, I knew we were
going to get a good result against Zambia. I predicted on Saturday that we were
going to win 2-1 and it came to pass and I'm so happy we got our first three
points. One of the positives in the
game was that our boys put in everything in the game although there were some
lapses from our team which brought pressure from the Zambians. The next game
against Algeria will not be easy but we should just keep improving and hopefully
we will get another win.”
