Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Was The Second Biggest Film Of 2016

It’s certainly been a good holiday season for the folks over at Disney. After opening to much praise from fans and critics alike, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has proven to be quite the juggernaut at the box office, both in North America and around the world. Quickly racking up an enormous profit for the studio and not looking to slow down anytime soon, we imagine that all involved couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.

There is more good news to report on. After a strong showing on Friday, the final box office numbers are expected to place the Anthology film at a whopping $441 million domestically. A staggering number, to be sure, and one that now puts it in second place on the list of 2016’s highest grossing movies. It’s dethroned Captain America: Civil War to take the spot  as Marvel’s effort sits at $408 million – and isn’t too far off from Finding Dory‘s $486 million.

Furthermore, analysts expect Rogue One to reach the $500 million mark before its domestic run is complete, meaning it’ll easily take the crown for 2016’s highest grossing movie – at least domestically. As far as the worldwide numbers go, it’s only sitting at #10, and while it may climb up a few more spots, it’s hard to see it receiving the top honor as it will on the domestic list. Still, this is a terrific performance from the prequel and one that should be seen as a tremendous success for all involved – especially given all the worries and unease surrounding it back in the summer.
