Euro 2016 Qualifiers Update, Wales Qualified Despite Lost

Italy qualified for Euro 2016 and kept up their unbeaten Group H record with victory over Azerbaijan in Baku. The Italians went ahead when Sampdoria striker Eder slotted in from Marco Verratti's superb pass.

Azerbaijan equalised through Dmitri Nazarov's low, first-time strike, but Italy regained the lead as Stephan El Shaarawy tapped in from close range. El Shaarawy's goal came after 3years of his last goal for the Azzurris, before Manchester United full-back Matteo Darmian hit a third.

Having failed to make it through to Sweden in 1992, Italy - runners-up in 2000 and 2012 - have now qualified for six consecutive Euro tournaments. Norway beat Malta 2-0 to go five points clear in second place, with third-placed Croatia facing Bulgaria later on Saturday.

Portugal also secured progress to next summer's Euro 2016 tournament as they defeated Demark by a lone goal scored by Joao Moutinho.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiago and Ricardo Carvalho have been released from the squad by Fernando Santos. Portugal are set to face Serbia on Sunday in their final group game of the qualifying campaign. The coach allowed the players to leave so as to allow other youngsters play the last match of the qualifying round.

Portugal’s win over Denmark meant that the Portuguese joined Austria, Czech Republic, England, Iceland and Northern Ireland in the Euro 2016 but this number could increase today as they are some games to be played later.
