Fede Alvarez Attached To Direct Monsterpocalypse Board Game Adaptation

 

When book and video game adaptations fail, turn to board games about giant monsters fighting man-made robots in the apocalypse. That’s what a group of big-wig Hollywood studios are thinking it seems, with news coming in that an intense bidding war is underway to net the movie rights for the tabletop game Monsterpocalypse.

Winning the deal will also get them Evil Dead reboot helmer Fede Alvarez, who is attached to not only direct Monsterpocalypse, but co-write the screenplay with writing partner Rodo Sayagues. Apparently Warner Bros., Sony, and DreamWorks are all in the Kaiju scuffle to come out on top for the auction, but no word was given on who might win it all.

The story of the game sounds very Pacific Rim-esque – pitting human-controlled robots against giant evil monsters in an attempt to save the Earth from destruction. That’s the reason Tim Burton’s adaptation of the game was shelved in 2010 ahead of word about Guillermo del Toro’s Kaiju flick. Sources close to the movie are now saying it has a substantially different take than previous iterations on the source material. The deal could come to a close sometime this week, but nothing is set in stone in the war between the studios.
