Man City Extend Lead At Top

Georgia Stanway’s hat-trick gave Manchester City Women a 3-0 win over Sunderland as they extended their lead at the top of FA WSL 1 to four points. Stanway opened the scoring after 17 minutes, when the 17-year-old capitalised upon a heavy touch from Danielle Brown, before running into the box and smashing the ball low past goalkeeper Rachael Laws at the near post.

The hosts had chances to extend their lead before the break with both Jane Ross and Lucy Bronze striking the crossbar. Stanway added a second in similar fashion shortly after the break when a ball into the box evaded the defence allowing the teenager to once again beat Laws at her near post and the teenager completed her hat-trick in spectacular fashion, firing a first time left-footed into the top corner of the net, rounding off a brilliant individual performance and sealing the points for City.

Arsenal missed the chance to leapfrog Chelsea and go second after they slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool. Fara Williams put Arsenal in front, scoring against her old club after just seven minutes before Dutch winger Shanice van de Sanden equalised for the visitors 14 minutes later. Former Gunner Caroline Weir snatched an unlikely victory for Scott Rogers' side with a wonderfully executed free-kick 13 minutes from time as Liverpool remain fifth in the table.
