Former Guatemalan football
official Hector Trujillo has been
handed an eight-month jail sentence to become the first person sentenced in the
FIFA corruption scandal. Trujillo pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud,
and one count of wire fraud conspiracy in a US federal court in Brooklyn four
months ago.
Judge Pamela Chen ruled the 63-year-old will start his sentence on November 20 in Florida,. Besides the prison term, the judge also ordered him to pay $415,000 in restitution. The judge said the $175,000 in bribes that Trujillo pocketed to steer sports marketing contracts to the federation over several years was money that should have been used to build soccer fields in poor neighborhoods or buy kit for young players.
