The Williams sisters would face each other at the ongoing Wimbledon Grand
Slam on Monday for the first time since 2009 and reports suggest that this
might be their last meeting.
The two Americans have dominated women’s tennis
for a generation and have won 27 Grand Slam title between them including10 at
Wimbledon.
Top seed Serena who is chasing her fourth consecutive Grand Slam has claimed
that her in-form elder sister Venus will be the favourite when both of them play
each other in the last 16. The clue that this could be the last game were they
would face each was given when Venus coach David Witt said in an interview “the message is, enjoy them while we’ve got
them, you’ll never see something like this again.”
The first time they met at the Wimbledon was in the 2000 semi-finals where
Venus won the match as she later won the tournament, making it her first Grand
Slam title though rumour has it that the win was arranged. Now, Venus is the
only thing that is standing in the way of her sister’s bid to complete the
third leg of a historic Grand Slam calendar. The meeting on Monday would be
their first since Venus beat Serena in August at Montreal and it happens to be the
third meeting in the last six seasons.
Venus who took a break from tennis as she recovered from Sjogren’s syndrome
won her fifth Wimbledon title and the last Major title on this ground in 2008. And
at this point Serena has even claimed that “She
is in better form than I am and I expect more people to be rooting for Venus. I
mean, she’s been through so much. She’s had a wonderful story. She’s been so
inspiring to me. She’s just an incredible individual.”
