The Tim Miller-directed comic book flick will be denied permission to screen
in China due to its graphic content.
The MPPA has officially given the movie an R rating for “strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity,” and that was evidently a bit much for China’s media regulator, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT).
China doesn’t actually use a movie rating system, but will outright ban a film they feel crosses the line. Usually their censors will work with the studios to make the appropriate cuts to gain a release, but apparently in this case “it wasn’t possible to excise the offending material without causing plot problems.” China currently boasts the world’s second largest movie market, so will this hurt the movie’s global box office takings? Well I guess we have to wait till February 12 when the movie would be release.
