Harry Kane And Jamie Vardy Score In Friendly Win

Strikers Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy scored to give England a 2-1 friendly win over Turkey at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Kane gave England the lead after three minutes with a calm finish from 12 yards, despite being played the ball in an offside position, before Hakan Calhanoglu equalised from close range 10 minutes later.

Kane missed a penalty with 20 minutes remaining, seeing his spot kick clip the post and go wide after Vardy had been brought down, but Vardy got the winner himself with seven minutes remaining from close range. It was Turkey's first defeat in 18 months, and next up for England is a clash with Australia on Friday at the Stadium of Light, before they complete their Euro 2016 preparation against Portugal at Wembley on June 2.

Roy Hodgson selected Vardy and Kane in a front two in Manchester, while Jack Wilshere started in midfield for the first time in 11 months. England started fastest, going close through Vardy after he got on the end of Kane's fine through ball into the area in the first minute. England were ahead moments later through Kane, who slotted home low into the right corner from inside the area after Dele Alli's delightful touch and pass, but replays showed the Tottenham striker was in an offside position before scoring his fifth senior international goal.

Ozan Tufan nearly had Turkey back on terms just a minute later, but his effort from a cut-back was superbly blocked by Kyle Walker as it headed for goal. Joe Hart was then forced into a save at his near post from Tufan, but the visitors were level on 13 minutes. After Volkan Sen was sent clear on the right, his unselfish pass to Calhanoglu allowed the Bayer Leverkusen forward to stroke the ball into the bottom left corner from 10 yards.

Wilshere's nifty footwork created an opening later in the half, but his left-footed shot from 20 yards was saved well by Volkan Babacan at his near post. England were let off on the stroke of half-time as Mehmet Topal's header from Calhanoglu's free-kick went just over the bar, with Turkey arguably deserving of a lead at the break. Cenk Tosun narrowly dragged an effort wide of Hart's left-hand post 10 minutes after the restart, moments after he had flashed a header inches wide of goal from a corner. Calhanoglu's delivery caused more problems after the hour mark as Hakan Balta's glancing header from his corner went nervously across the face of Hart's goal.

Vardy's pace caused Topal to topple the Leicester forward inside the area with 20 minutes remaining, but in the absence of captain Wayne Rooney, Kane's penalty clipped the left-hand post and went wide. Hodgson introduced Danny Drinkwater and Jordan Henderson in the second period, but it was Vardy who grabbed England's winner. After Cahill's header from a corner was parried into the path of the striker, Vardy converted the rebound from a slight angle three yards out for his third goal for England in seven appearances.

Kane nearly doubled his tally and England's lead in stoppage time, but his effort on the stretch went just wide of the right-hand post, before Hart produced a magnificent save to his right to deny Olcay Sahan at the death.
