Mourinho
held talks with executive vice-chairman Ed
Woodward, managing director Richard
Arnold and Sir Bobby Charlton at
their training base. Charlton has previously been a harsh critic
of Mourinho and was understood to have championed the case for Ryan Giggs to take over, but spoke at
length with the new boss as their new era begins.
Louis van Gaal’s successor also became acquainted with other senior staff as he took his first tour of the complex on a day United announced Marcus Rashford had penned a new four-year contract worth £25,000 a week. It is also understood Michael Carrick has committed to an 11th campaign after Van Gaal’s departure.
Rashford said “I am delighted. I have always been a Manchester United fan, so to be playing in the first team really is a dream come true. I am grateful for having the chance to prove myself. To be able to play football at the biggest club in the world means everything to me and my family”
Woodward will press ahead with Mourinho’s plans to land signings early before pre-season begins in July, with the club keen to quickly narrow down their list of targets. They have made an enquiry about Roma defender Kostas Manolas and are ready to lodge a £54million bid for Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez. Mourinho remains an admirer of Nemanja Matic, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also on their radar.
