Williams is trying to equal Steffi Graf's record by winning her 22nd Grand Slam title and will next face either 26th seed Kristina Mladenovic or Hungary's Timea Babos.
Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 winner, is also through to the third round after a 7-5 6-1 win over Kurumi Nara, but former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard has bowed out after a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Timea Bacsinszky.
