The total prize fund is up £3m on 2015 for the tournament which gets underway on August 29 at Flushing Meadows. The runners-up in each singles tournament will receive £1.3m, with a first-round defeat worth £32,600, while winning teams in the doubles competitions will share £470,900.
USTA president Katrina Adams said “We are proud that this year's US Open will offer the richest purse in tennis history, we continue to invest in all aspects of this world-class event to provide the best services and experiences for the players, our fans and all of the US Open partners.”
This year's US Open will also see improvements from a spectator's point of view, with the roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium in place and a new Grandstand in one corner of the complex.
