Tennis star, Serena Williams has hit
another milestone winning her 7th Wimbledon title today, July 9.
Serena stormed to a 7-5, 6-3 straight set win at Centre Court on Saturday
against German fourth seed Angelique
Kerber who had
earlier defeated her at the Australian Open final in January.
With the win,
34-year-old Serena has now matched the second all-time Grand Slam wins as she
ties Steffi Graf‘s record of 22
Grand Slam total.
‘It’s been incredibly difficult not to think
about it,’ Serena said
of finally winning number 22.‘It makes the victory even sweeter to know
how hard I worked hard for it.’
‘This court definitely feels like home, I have a match later
today in the doubles, so I’ll be back out.’
Though the
new achievement makes her tied as first for the most in the Open Era, she is
now just two major titles off matching Margaret
Court‘s all-time record of 24 wins.
Serena also
holds the record for the only tennis player to have won 10 Grand Slam singles
titles in two separate decades.
