Six months on from the moment MGM secured Pitch Perfect‘s Rebel
Wilson, Deadline is reporting today
that Anne Hathaway has entered negotiations to climb aboard the
studio’s female-led remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Steve
Martin and Michael Caine headlined Frank
Oz’s original slapstick comedy back in ’88 but this time, it
is Hathaway and Wilson that are seemingly poised to take point as two
scam artists who put social differences to one side in order to steal a
small fortune from a wildly successful tech prodigy. Hilarity and some good
old-fashioned hustling ensue, and we understand that Jac Schaeffer is attached to pen the screenplay for MGM. No word
yet on who will direct the remake, but Deadline notes that Rebel Wilson has
also signed on to produce alongside Roger
Birnbaum.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is now beginning to take shape at MGM, though there’s
currently no mention of a production timeline. As for Anne Hathaway, the
actress is coming hot off Nacho Vigalondo’s unusual sci-fi pic Colossal, and will soon toast to honour among thieves in the Gary
Ross-directed Ocean’s Eight. Look for
that one to debut on June 8, 2018.
