The Daddy’s Home Sequel Is Eyeing Mel Gibson For Key Role

Daddy’s Home may have received mixed reviews from critics when it was released back in 2015, but it was a hit at the box office with a worldwide total of $240 million on a budget of just $70 million. That’s fairly impressive for a comedy, and enough of a haul that it took no time at all for there to be talk of a sequel.

It’s still in the early stages of development, but Daddy’s Home 2 has already made two seriously impressive casting additions. Paramount Pictures is in talks with Mel Gibson and John Lithgow for roles in the film, and while character details haven’t been revealed, it may not be too much of a stretch to assume that they could be playing the fathers of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

In Daddy’s Home, the story revolved around a war between a caring step-father (Ferrell) and the cool real dad (Wahlberg), but things wrapped up with them putting their differences aside. The arrival of John Cena near the end of the film as a rival to the latter seemingly indicated where a sequel could go, though the wrestler’s involvement in Daddy’s Home 2 is unclear at this stage.

Sean Anders will once again direct and we expect the follow-up to be with us in 2018. No word yet on an exact release date, but with casting now heating up, it shouldn’t be too long before we get more information on this one.
