It was Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin who stood out for the home side. Gueye gave Everton the lead
shortly before half-time, but the visitors threatened a comeback in the second
half and went close to equalising when Jermain Defoe saw a shot hit the bar and
bounce down on the line.
He said “it's a really strong midfield, and we have a lot of competition, James McCarthy and Gareth Barry were not starting, and it's nice to have those kind of options. It's really strong. You saw the quality of Morgan Schneiderlin today and Gana Gueye is back from the Africa Cup of Nations with good fitness and showing a high level.”
