Osita Aninweke a former Nigerian league star, died in the early hours
of Wednesday after suffering multiple strokes. Popularly known
as 'Congo' the diminutive ex-midfield dynamite was a household name playing for
top clubs.
He also got invited to the U-20 national team, the Flying
Eagles and the Super Eagles a couple of times. Congo' was a
member of the 1989 Bendel United
team that lost the African Cup Winners Cup final to Al Merriek of Sudan.
Aninweke, who was 52, had suffered a partial stroke on
Sunday morning in Ajah, a suburb of Lagos where he lived and coached a
group of retired footballers. He was taken to General Hospital, Marina, Lagos
after he was initially admitted to a private hospital in Ajah, he suffered two
more strokes and gave up the ghost by 2am Wednesday. The news of his
death was broken by his cousin, Brazil Aninweke, himself a former league player
with Railways of Lagos and Delta Stars of Ughelli.
