The Beguiled will see Sofia
Coppolla taking the plunge into gothic horror. The film is an adaption of
the novel The Painted Devil by Thomas P. Cullinan and was already made
for the screen in 1971 courtesy of Don
Siegel and Clint Eastwood.
Set in rural Mississippi during the
civil war, the story takes place in an isolated all girls boarding school.
Their peace is broken by the arrival of an injured soldier, his innate
manliness quickly sending the women into a downward spiral of sexual jealousy
and extreme violence.
The Beguiled is set to hit theatres on June 23rd, slap bang in the
middle of a busy summer of muscled men punching each other through buildings
and things loudly going boom. I sincerely hope this promising looking slice of
southern gothic doesn’t get lost in the blockbuster melee.
