Kano Pillars 12-year streak at home falls nobody, not even the bravest of pundits, came close to
making the call that Nasarawa United will shatter a record of more than a decade held by Kano Pillars. But on Sunday, Nasarawa United pulled down the Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. Inside 16 minutes of play and the Solid Miners were two-nil up, not even the other big clubs have managed to come up with such lead in Kano in more than a decade. Coincidentally, Nasarawa United were only founded in 2003 - same year that Kano Pillars began stitching up a record that lasted 202 home unbeaten matches in the NPFL before Mannir Ubale and Yaro Bature scored quickfire goals to knock the wind out of the sails of the Kano club in front of their more than 15,000 faithful packed inside the stadium. The two Port Harcourt clubs, Dolphins and Sharks ground out results on the road to put life into their survival race in the top flight. Sharks got one of the two away wins of the match day with a 1-0 at Bayelsa United who are still without a win in the second round of the campaign. Christian Pyagbara scored the winner for the Blue Angels. Dolphins got themselves to a good start at Rangers through Ghanaian striker Godbless Asamoah in the 10th minute. An equaliser by Evans Iyoro and a red card to their captain and centre-back, Festus Austin, meant they had to play men behind the ball to earn themselves a point that looks like three under the circumstance they find themselves. Sunshine Stars demolished El kanemi Warriors 5-0 in their Nigeria Professional Football League match at the Akure Township Stadium on Sunday. The result is the biggest in the ongoing top flight campaign. Sunshine Stars retained second spot after Enyimba defeated FC Taraba on Monday. El kanemi Warriors defenders were ball watching as Paul Onobi deposited the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was a surprise that the first half ended one-nil. The Owena Waves were very complacent in front of goal. Sunshine Stars had their second with just nine minutes gone in the second half. The visitors were caught napping again and Onobi dragged the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead for the home team. Sunshine Stars didn’t stop¸ as they attacked the opposition, and had their third goal of the evening in the 65th minute. A stunning pass arrived at the path of Prince Aggrey who was unmarked and made no mistake to make it 3-0 to Sunshine Stars. Five minutes from time, it was 4-0 to Sunshine Stars as the Borno Army were left in tatters. Tunde Adeniji produced a good strike to find the left hand side of goal. In the 90th minute, the massacre was complete as Sunshine Stars smashed in their fifth. Aggrey perfectly picked his spot for a 5-0 scoreline and a brace for himself. Adeniji scores 13th goal of the season Sunshine Stars striker, Tunde Adeniji, has put a two-goal difference between himself and the chasing pack for the leading scorer's award. He netted the last goal in a five-nil thumping of El Kanemi Warriors to take his total league goals for the season to 13. Now he is just 10 goals away from equalling Mfon Udoh's 23-goal record in a single season. Sunshine Stars to hit 40-goal mark in blitz Second-placed Sunshine Stars have become the first team to score 40 goals this season though their average goal per game still falls short of two - it stands at 1.64 goal per game. Interestingly 80% of their total goals have been scored in their home matches in which they have a flawless record of 100%. Away wins tallies with last term's Last season the total number of away wins were 24 and on the weekend of match day 25 that was equalled after Sharks won 1-0 at Bayelsa United and Nasarawa United claimed the scalp of Kano Pillars in a 2-1 win in front of their dedicated fans. Sharks head coach Festus Allen was delighted when his boys defeated 1-0 win Bayelsa United at the Oghara Township Stadium on Sunday. Their leading goal scorer Christian Pyagbara made a mug of the Bayelsa United defenders before scoring the match winner in the 65th minute of the match. The Pride of Benue entertained the Anambra Warriors at the Aper Aku
Stadium and snatched full points with a 1-0 success. The away side stuck to their game plan but but could only hold Lobi from scoring in the second half. Lobi Stars gaol poacher Anthony Okpotu scored the only goal in the 65 minute to give his side a 1-0 victory. Nasarawa United made history as they became the first side to defeat Kano Pillars at home in twelve years. At the end of hostilities it was the Solid Miners who prevailed with a hard fought 2-1 victory at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday. Nasarawa United went into their game as underdogs and no one thought an upset will happen¸ so when the match started there were not given the chance as Kano Pillars started well in front of their home crowd, but the Nasarawa united players showed early signs when full-back Nweke Ifeanyi tried an ambitious chip six minutes into the match. The away side were duly rewarded for their fearless approach when two former Kano Pillars star combined in a brilliant move for the opener. Defensive midfielder Eugene Obi spotted the rampaging Mannir Ubale and the striker put the
ball beyond goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai. In the 16th minute, the hosts were in a mess again. Ubale who was menacing on match-day found the surging run of Yaro Bature, as he released a fierce left-footed drive to the back of the net, making it two nil before the break. Nasarawa United completely dominated the clueless hosts who were in dire need of inspiration. They almost made it three-nil in the 27th minute. Esosa Igbinoba struck from a free-kick and hit the woodwork. Pillars fans were completely silent and dumbfounded as the game continued. The hosts needed a goal and they almost found it. Team skipper Rabiu Ali found his way to the box and saw his shot parried away by goalkeeper Danlami Umar. Nasarawa United protected their two-goal lead until the first half ended. One minute into the second half, Pillars fans found their voices as Ali pulled one back. The pressure started to turn on Nasarawa United after the deficit was reduced. Pillars had a penalty appeal ignored by female referee Uloma Nwogu who stood her ground. Ali remained the source of
inspiration that the hosts needed and he went close on the hour mark. With reality check beckoning, Pillars gaffer Ganaru introduced Gambo Mohammed to the match. The striker got a loud
ovation from the fans as he was playing his first game since the unfortunate armed robbery attack that the team was involved in earlier in the season. Pillars were desperate to equalize but the defensive
pair of Abdulbasit Shittu and Sogbeso Seun of Nasarawa united were not in off day, they really made their presence felt. At the end of the entertaining game, the long-standing home record of Pillars was
finally broken by the apprentice against his boss. A lone strike from Ismail Gata proved to be enough for Kwara United as they edged Shooting Stars one-nil in the match played at the Kwara Stadium on Sunday. Gata hunted his former team with the decisive effort in the first half and he ensured that his team returned to winning ways after a poor spell of three losses in a row. For Shooting Stars they shot themselves by the foot as they were guilty of several misses. The game lived up to its billing as the two sides showed attacking intent from the blast of the whistle by the referee, Mr Ibrahim Fagge who gave a good account of himself. Former youth international Olufemi Oladapo tried an ambitious curler to the right hand post of Isa Danladi in the 5th minute. The hosts had a penalty appeal ignored by the referee as they felt busy Halilu Obadaki was hacked down in the box. It was a warning signal to the Oluyole Warriors as they were soon chasing the match. A counter attack was initiated by Kwara United with Abubakar Salman forcing goalkeeper Danladi to spill a close range bullet to the path of Gata who graciously turned the ball home against his former employers.
Gbolahan Salami scored a first half penalty as Warri Wolves claimed a 1-0 win over visiting Wikki Tourists of Bauchi in Sunday's Glo Premier League fixture at the Warri Township Stadium. The Super Eagles striker netted his tenth goal of the season after goalkeeper Emeka Nwabulu had brought down Oghenkaro Etebo in the 34th minute. Both teams started the day tied on points albeit with the Warri based side one place ahead on the log courtesy of their superior goal difference as the race for Continental places hots up. It was a tough battle in Aba and title contenders, Enyimba FC fought hard to pip FC Taraba 1-0 and reclaim the top spot on the Glo Premier League table on Monday. The
top versus bottom fixture was originally billed for Sunday but was postponed to Monday due to heavy rains, and accorded Sunshine Stars of Akure the opportunity to assume top spot after their
victory against El-Kanemi. The People Elephant had a blistering start peppering their visitors in
a series of raids in the opening minutes but met an in-form Obilo Ikechukwu in goal for FC Taraba. Obilo comfortably made serials saves from Kingsley Sokari, Mfon Udoh, Peter Onyekachi and Ifeanyi George in one-on-one encounters against Onyekachi and George on two occasions. The homers were in superb form in the number of chances created but failed to make it count as they wasted numerous opportunities and the first half ended goalless. The breakthrough finally came for Enyimba in the 76th minute when a misplaced pass got to Onyekachi who did well to hold off the challenge of a defender before cutting back to an on rushing Najare to tap in for the only goal of the game. With the win, Enyimba opened a two points lead and will next travel to Port Harcourt, a place they had not lost in three seasons to take on Sharks on Sunday.
Federation Cup finalists Akwa United battled out a 2-2 draw against an organized Giwa FC at the Nest of Champions, Uyo. Giwa went in front on the 35th minute through striker Ocheme Edoh who slid home from close range but the hosts turned the tie around in the second half. First Aniekan Ekpe equalized from the penalty spot on the hour mark before Ukeme Davies put them ahead for the first time in the match four minutes later. The visitors however drew level again on the 74th minute and held on for an important away point. The host went ahead with their second goal which came ten minutes before the break when in one of Giwa's rare forays, they went in front. Striker Ocheme Edoh slid home after Akwa United goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode failed to deal with a cross that fell to Lawal Shittu, the full back kept his composure to square back for Edoh to score his 7th goal this season. The hosts could not conjure up a meaningful response before the end of the first half. They however
pulled level fifteen minutes into the second half after Giwa's Ibrahim Akide was penalized for handball inside the penalty box. Ekpe fired home scored the resultant penalty to level scores at 2all.
Abia Warriors reached the 40-point mark in the Nigeria Professional Football League with a 1-0
win Heartland in a league match on Sunday. The home side controlled the early possession and
made their pressure tell in the 18th minute with the opening goal courtesy of Chisom Chikatara. The goal came about from the penalty spot after Ebere Odiche was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Abia Warriors continued to control possession but struggled to score in the game. Heartland were reduced to ten men in the 88th minute as Brownbraye Okpus was sent-off
