Nigerian players over the
years have not been finding the UEFA Champions League as a good playing ground
as only few Nigerians have had the opportunity to have played in the biggest
competition in European.
The most consistent of them
is John Obi Mikel as he has lifted the cup, apart from him, only a few other
Nigerians have done great exploits in the Champions League; let's take a look
at the Nigerian players in the champions’ league in the 2015/2016 season.
Captain Ahmed Musa couldn't
stop Wayne "wazza" Rooney from equaling Dennis Law tally of 237 goals
for United. Musa played for the entire duration of the match but he was unable
to hit the bull's eye.
Former West Brom forward Brown
Ideye was also action as he helped his team Olympiakos to a comprehensive two to
one win over Dinamo Zagreb of Crotia. He was instrumental in the game as he
continually tormented the defense of Zagreb. His team is in second place behind
Bayern Munchen.
John Obi Mikel was not listed
by Chelsea as they faced Dynamo Kiev as his team fought for a deserved win
against their visitors after they went ahead in the 34th minute through an own
goal from Aleksandar Dragovic, who later scored in the 77th to level the score
before Willian scored a superb freekick to win the game for Chelsea.
Nigerian international Nosa
Igiebor started from the bench as his team lost at home to FC Porto. He was
introduced in the 82nd minute after his team had already gone 3 goals down, he
couldn't help his team to even the score as the game ended three goals to one.
So in this year's champion's
league, we have only four Nigerians in the biggest competition in Europe, the
UEFA champions League, no wonder, none of our players could make the shortlist
of the ten African player of the year.
What could be wrong with our
players been dropped? Is it that they are not playing very well in the top
leagues or they are not committed to the national team, in case you miss the
shortlist of the ten African players released by CAF recently here's it
1. Andre Ayew (Swansea City) -
Ghana
2. Aymen Abdennour (Valencia)
- Tunisia
3. Mudather Eltaib Ibrahim
'Karika' (Al-Hilal) - Sudan
4. Mohamed Salah (Roma) - Egypt
5. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia
Dortmund)- Gabon
6. Sadio Mane (Southampton) -Senegal
7. Serge Aurier (Paris
Saint-Germain) - Ivory Coast
8. Sofiane Feghouli (Valencia)
- Algeria
9. Yacine Brahimi (FC Porto) -
Algeria
10. Yaya Toure (Manchester
City) Ivory Coast
I seriously think that
Aubameyang would win it this time; I don't see Yaya winning it for 5th time in
a row.
