Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he will be active in the January transfer window as he wants to bolster his squad to compete in three competitions.
Normally timid
on his transfer plans, Wenger confirmed on Wednesday that he has already been
working towards securing new arrivals at the Emirates Stadium saying “I'll be busy, that's for sure. I am already
busy and I said already one month ago, we are a bit short to deal with all the
competitions we face, especially in midfield. We will be busy, yes”. The club
has been linked with signing Basle
midfielder Mohamed Elneny for
£7.4million, but Wenger returned to his usual, guarded ways when asked if the
deal was close to completion. “You know more than I do, unfortunately we cannot
announce anything at the moment about this player because nothing has been
concluded” he said.
Wenger wants
to increase his options in the Arsenal team with his side in the last 16 of the
Champions League, where they will
meet Barcelona, as well as defending
their FA Cup title and leading the Premier League at the halfway stage. The
Frenchman believes it is too early to predict who will win the title this
season but believes his team has all the capabilities to lift the trophy. “I believe that we are mature enough and
that we have the requested quality to fight and compete,' Wenger said. 'The
public opinion is not always stable, it changes a lot. It is always linked with
the final result. We have to rise above that and show that we can deal with all
that. We can have
great solidarity in every single game and after that we have a chance. You
cannot rule us out after 19 games. We have a chance and we want to fight for it”
he said.
The Gunners
boss revealed that right-back Mathieu Debuchy
could leave as he wants first-team football to boost his hopes of playing at
Euro 2016 for hosts France.
