30 Team Captains Who Didn’t Vote For Messi

On Monday night Barcelona forward Lionel Messi beat Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate Neymar to win the Ballon d’Or after picking up an impressive 41.33 per cent of the votes but those vote didn’t include that of Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger and Colombia skipper James Rodriguez .

Players are required to vote for three of their peers, with their first choice awarded five points, their second choice three points and third choice a single point but despite scoring 52 goals for club and country last year, Messi didn't do enough to make it into the top three selections of a host of internationals. Portugal talisman Ronaldo opted for club team-mates Karim Benzema, Rodriguez and Gareth Bale in that order. Rodriguez also stuck with Los Blancos, picking Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale. Messi himself stuck with those he knows best, choosing Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

Crystal Palace and Australia midfielder Mile Jedinak voted for Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Neymar, while New Zealand captain Chris Wood chose Lewandowski, Paul Pogba and Kevin De Bruyne. Another surprise vote was by Guinea skipper Florentin Pogba who ignored brother Paul Pogba and voted for Messi, Ronaldo and Neuer.
