The England
striker smashed a late winner for Louis
van Gaal's side after Jurgen Klopp's
men failed to make their dominance count. This would be his third goal in two
matches after scoring a brace in a 3-3 draw against Premier League strugglers Newcastle United.
The
decisive goal took Rooney ahead of Thierry
Henry's record of 175 Premier League goals for a single club. Rooney has been under intense
scrutiny following United's poor start to the season and a poor goal return
which saw the forward net just twice for his club between August and December. 2016
has been a fresh start for the experienced forward, however, scoring five times
in United's four January fixtures and adding to his career total of 242 career
goals for the Manchester club. Newcastle
legend Alan Shearer earns third
spot with 148 goals during his 10-year spell on Tyneside and is the only player
to feature twice following his 112-goal haul at Blackburn Rovers between 1992 and 1996.
