Louis van Gaal’s side suffered an early Champions
League exit and was knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Middlesbrough yet they are still set to rake in millions during
what has been a successful season off the pitch as they appear to be more
profitable than they have ever been. Projections suggest that the
prize for finishing fourth in last year’s Premier League and reaching the Champions’
League group stages will see them pocket an amount in
the region of £28m
and that’s based on
forecasts relating to the Premier League’s market pool percentage in Europe,
standing more than a fifth of all money distributed in 2014-15. United’s take from competing in the group stages is
£16m after prize money for winning their play-off games and finishing third
with eight points. That figure also includes their
share of half the English pot relating to last season’s league finish. They are
handed a flat 10 per cent of that via fourth-placed qualification, which will
stand at around £4.6m, to be confirmed. Their involvement in the Europa League
will also garner sizeable profits.
United domestic
competition money will only reach the region of £500,000 if Shrewsbury were to
beat United at New Meadow on February 22, and aided by having three matches
screened on television. A further £3.3m is up for grabs for whichever team ends
up lifting the FA Cup at Wembley in May.
