Harry Redknapp is in talks with Derby County about a temporary
consultancy role until the end of the season. It is understood the former Tottenham, QPR, Southampton and West Ham boss is keen on the prospect
of working with current head coach Darren
Wassall, who replaced the sacked Paul
Clement last month.
Redknapp wants to help his friend Mel
Morris, the Derby chairman, who is keen to use Redknapp for his experience
in order to get the club back into the Premier League. The Rams confirmed in a
statement on Monday: “Discussions have
been held with Harry Redknapp regarding the possibility of working in an
advisory role until the end of the season. This would potentially provide
support to Darren Wassall and the rest of the coaching team”.
A number of national newspapers have reported Redknapp will takeover as
director of football, but Redknapp said he is not interested in that
title. Redknapp resigned as QPR manager in February 2015 citing the urgent need
for a knee operation and, less than three months prior, Redknapp gave an
interview to the London Evening Standard in which he labelled the
director of football position a joke.
That interview came just a month after Les
Ferdinand was hired as QPR's head of football operations and Ferdinand was
subsequently renamed as the club's director of football two days after
Redknapp's resignation.
