Characters Who Should Appear In Supergirl Season 2

It sometimes feels that Supergirl is the forgotten younger sibling of DC’s TV shows. Like a little sister not allowed in her big brothers’ club, Supergirl doesn’t have the widespread fandom on the internet that we see with the likes of Arrow and The Flash.

As this inaugural season starring the Girl of Steel has had many plus points. From the surprisingly likeable Cat Grant, to the inclusion of the freakin’ Martian Manhunter to, last but not least, Supergirl herself portrayed pitchy-perfectly by Melissa Benoist.
With the season one finale having just aired, here are characters we would love to see turn up in Supergirl season two.

1) Green Arrow

The Supergirl/The Flash crossover episode, “Worlds Finest,” was possibly the highlight of this season, as it properly cemented the new series as part of DC’s close-knit band of superhero shows. Hopefully, then, this is something that will be expanded upon if the show gets another shot. We’d love to see the Flash return to National City, as Grant Gustin and Benoist had great chemistry together. But, how about he brings Green Arrow along for the ride as well next time?
Brooding ol’ Oliver Queen might not be a character who would naturally fit in Supergirl’s generally brighter world, but that’s part of the fun of superhero mash-ups; to highlight the similarities and differences between our heroes as they stand side by side.

2) Brainiac

A recurring foe throughout Supergirl’s first season was Indigo, who was basically a female take on classic Superman villain Brainiac. It’s a nice idea to give Supergirl her own versions of her cousin’s enemies, but unfortunately Indigo and her associate, Zod stand-in General Non (descript), were poorly-realized villains. For season two, then, the show should just do away with the imitations and introduce the proper Brainiac.
Brainiac 5, in particular, would be a great addition. In the comics he has a creepy romantic interest in Supergirl, which would make for an interesting element to the new Big Bad. This Brainiac is also a pretty exciting character, as he later rejects evil and joins the Legion of Superheroes.

3) Legion Of Superheroes

In season one episode “Solitude,” Kara visits – you’ve guessed it – her cousin’s Fortress of Solitude. If you’ve got good eyes, you might notice one of the flight rings of the Legion of Superheroes on display. Hopefully, this is a tease for the team’s eventual introduction. The Legion of Superheroes is a superpowered group from the 31st century – featuring the likes of Chameleon Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad – who travel back in time to the present. Usually they ally themselves with a young Superman, but Supergirl could easily fill this role if they appeared in her series.
The Legion is one of those comic properties that is not about to get a big screen outing anytime soon, so it would be great to see them in live-action in some form. Plus, the lighter tone they are known for means they’d be well-suited to Supergirl.

4) Batman

One of the best things about Supergirl is how it gives us an alternate look at the Superman mythos, one that is worlds away from Zack Snyder’s big-screen take. In Kara Danvers, we have the unbeatable symbol of hope – who never kills people – which Henry Cavill’s mopey Supes hasn’t really managed to be.
As such, if we can have this lighter take on Superman then why can’t we have a less angsty Batman? After the grimdark nature of Batman V Superman, it would be nice to see a version who is completely the opposite, to remind people that Nolan’s take on the character isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of the Caped Crusader. Supergirl even made a reference to Bats in a previous episode. When faced with a masked menace, Kara says: “I thought masks were popular in that other city.”

5) Miss Martian

The greatest surprise of Supergirl’s first season was the reveal that DEO boss Hank Henshaw was in fact the Martian Manhunter – a long-time member of the Justice League in the comics. As it seems he will be unfairly ignored in the movies, it was fantastic to see him in action here.
J’onn J’onzz’ backstory is that he is the last of his kind. However, in other versions he does have a niece, M’gann M’orzz – otherwise known as Miss Martian. Hopefully, she’s a character season two will introduce into Supergirl’s world.
Introducing M’Gann would not only give Kara another female superhero as an ally, but would also continue J’onn’s story – some of his grief over being the last Martian could be alleviated by the presence of another of his race.

6) Superboy

The latter episodes of season one introduced the idea of Project Cadmus, a mysterious governmental facility that experiment on aliens and kidnapped Kara’s step-father Jeremiah. Fans of the Young Justice TV series will know that Cadmus is usually responsible for creating Superboy, a teenage clone of Kal-El.
Superboy’s addition would make for a nifty new arc for Kara’s character. After all, she was sent to Earth to protect her cousin but ended up arriving later than him due to the Phantom Zone. Superboy is usually depicted as an angrier, more conflicted character than Superman, so in the show, Supergirl could act as a mentor to her cousin’s clone, just as she was meant to be for Clark.
7) Superman
Yes, there is one major character that every Supergirl fan wants to turn up in the show if it continues. Kara’s cousin has appeared as a child, in silhouette, even via text message so far, but he has never actually properly shown up. At first, they presumably feared that introducing the big blue guy himself would take the limelight away from Kara. Now, however, we have spent a whole season with the character and appreciate her as her own person and not just for the connection to her cousin.
The finale bent over backwards to find a reason why the Man of Steel couldn’t turn up and help Kara out, and it still didn’t come up with a decent explanation. Hopefully this sort of thing won’t happen again and Superman will just turn up next time around.
