J.J. Abrams Weighs In On Rey’s Parentage Debate

If talk of Rey’s parentage had gradually settled over the past few months, then the premiere of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s first trailer ignited the debate all over again.

Much of that speculation stemmed from Rogue One‘s Jyn Erso, the tenacious Rebel played by Felicity Jones. Considering that Gareth Edwards’ prequel takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, some corners of the Internet stipulated that Erso is in fact Rey’s long-lost mother. It didn’t take long for actress Daisy Ridley to quickly step in and cool the rumours, now J.J. Abrams himself has weighed in on the debate.

Speaking to THR, Abrams first noted that “Rey’s parents are not in ‘Episode VII.’ So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too”. Perhaps in an effort to keep the thick veil of secrecy intact, the filmmaker later clarified those comments stating that: “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in ‘Episode VII.’ Not that they may not already be in her world”.
