Bendtner had been asked to stay away from the club's training ground following a series of off-the-field incidents, including posing for an Instagram photograph next to a Mercedes, a rival to the club's main sponsor Volkswagen.
Wolfsburg director of sport Klaus Allofs told the club's website “Both Nicklas and ourselves had high hopes for him at Wolfsburg, but after two years, expectations were neither fulfilled for him, nor for us, and a continued cooperation made no sense for either side. For that reason the mutual decision to end our association prematurely is the best solution for all parties. We wish Nicklas all the very best for his future career”.
Bendtner, who joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer in 2014, made 47 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals.
