New Alice Through the Looking Glass Trailer

This month is chock full of sequels. Captain America: Civil War just kicked off the blockbuster movie another comic book sequel is on the way with X-Men: Apocalypse arriving later this month, but the film will face some pretty big competition with Disney’s sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

Alice Through the Looking Glass finds the title character, played by Mia Wasikowska, away from Underland for a long while. And by the time she has returned from sailing the high seas, the magical place she saved and loved is being destroyed by Time (Sacha Baron Cohen). Not only that, but The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), her truest friend, seems to have forgotten all about her. It’s all explained in the new Alice Through the Looking Glass trailer and clips after the jump.

This is starting to feel a little too far removed from what Alice in Wonderland is really supposed to be like. Tim Burton’s take on the original story was a little more grim and twisted with his gothic circus style. Sure, there was some big fantasy action, but this sequel almost has the feel of a Hellboy movie or a psychedelic Lord of the Rings.

One features Alice being told about the Mad Hatter’s condition by The White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and Tweedledee & Tweedledum (Matt Lucas). The other finds Alice meeting a younger Mad Hatter who doesn’t remember who she is at all. Watch them right here:

Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), Absolem (Alan Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Anne Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out.

Alice Through the Looking Glass arrives this month on May 27.
