Ronald Koeman Happy At Southampton

 

Ronald Koeman insists he is happy at Southampton, as speculation builds over who will replace Roberto Martinez at Everton. The Dutchman agreed a three-year deal when he replaced Mauricio Pochettino in 2014 and his stock has risen having led the team to their highest Premier League position last year (seventh) and could improve on that depending on results this weekend.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's final game of the season Koeman was asked whether he would be sticking around at St Mary's in the wake of Everton sacking their manager on Thursday. He said: “I am manager of Southampton, everyone knows I have one more year of my contract. I got asked the same question last week. We will sit together and analyse this season and talk about the future. That's what the news is”. Asked if he would be staying, Koeman stated: Yes.

With just 12 months left on his contract and impending discussions with the board over his future, the former Barcelona assistant manager was asked if he felt Southampton's continued fine form had put him in a strong negotiating position for improved terms.  He added: “It's good news the club likes to continue and that means the club is happy with our work and with the technical staff and the players. There is a very good understanding between the manager and players and that's good. It's important to continue. Let's do our job this weekend and there is time next week before I go on holiday to talk about the future for the club”.

Koeman's words should be a big boost for Saints fans before this weekend's season finale, coming soon after the news that Fraser Forster, James Ward-Prowse and Virgil van Dijk have signed contract extensions.
