Johanna Konta Into Second Round Of Aegon Classic

 

Johanna Konta made it into the second round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham before rain returned to further delay the schedule. The British No 1 had to wait until Thursday to play her opening game in the tournament and she overcame a slow start to beat Japan's Misaki Doi 7-6 6-1.

Konta had been due to play twice on the same day, but the bad weather forced an early abandonment for the third day in four and also stopped Heather Watson playing her second round match.

Yanina Wickmayer of Switzerland will be Konta's next opponent, while Watson is due to play Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic for a place in the last-eight. Wickmayer beat former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-7 6-2 earlier on Thursday in a game that could not be completed on Wednesday.
