In reviving the 'Saw' series, Lionsgate enlist new directors

After much hemming and hawing, Lionsgate is finally poised to pump fresh blood into its dormant Saw series. Tentatively titled Legacy, the franchise revival has reportedly enlisted Peter and Michael Spierig, with production to commence as early as late summer. That’s according to Bloody Disgusting, revealing that the siblings are set to place Winchester Mystery House on ice in favour of Lionsgate’s horror reboot.

First hatched all the way back in 2003, the Saw franchise enthralled horror fans for almost a decade before production began to trickle out after the mooted reception of Saw 3D. Back then, the cult genre piece represented James Wan’s directorial debut, who has now gone on to become a modern icon of horror following work across the Insidious and Conjuring franchises.

When it comes to Saw: Legacy, though, a back-to-bloody-basics approach would certainly help draw back the crowds, but for now, it’s anyone’s guess whether Lionsgate will bring back a certain John Kramer (AKA Jigsaw) for more fun and twisted games.

It’s official: Saw: Legacy will lens in Toronto from September and will, in all likelihood, be aligned for a release in and around that all-important Halloween corridor.
