Stefan Heinze Fighting For Life

Stefan Heinze Germany's canoe slalom coach is fighting for his life in a Rio hospital after he was involved in a car crash on Friday. Heinze suffered serious head injuries in the crash, which occurred when he was returning to the Olympic Village in a taxi, with a German colleague suffering minor injuries.

He has undergone emergency surgery and a statement from the German Olympic Association (DOSB) said: According to the doctors his head injuries are life-threatening. The DOSB said the crash took place in the Barra area of Rio, and it was the second such incident of the day.

A bus carrying journalists to one of the Olympic venues scraped another bus in an earlier crash but no-one was hurt. Security and traffic have been a main concern for teams at the Rio Games while several official Olympic buses have been involved in traffic accidents.
