Robin Hood Is Coming Back As Lionsgate Sets On 2018 Release Date

Robin Hood: Origins has finally set sights on an official release date: March 23, 2018. Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment made the announcement yesterday evening, confirming that Taron Egerton will take up arms as the legendary outlaw in two years’ time. Angled as a darker, grittier take on the folklore legend, Otto Bathurst of Peaky Blinders fame is on board to direct, and will usher Robin Hood back to the Sherwood Forest at a time when Hood’s rightful home has fallen prey to corruption and evil. Rather than stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, Egerton’s title hero sets about assembling a band of outlaws, as they rise up against the corrupt English crown. Jamie Foxx, Jamie Dornan , and Eve Hewson also star.

Joby Harold is the brains behind the screenplay, and by this stage we know fine well that Robin Hood: Origins isn’t the only in-development feature set to retell the classic folklore story. Hood, for instance, is a Fast and Furious-styled reboot that has set up shop at Sony, while Disney is quietly making progress on Nottingham & Hood. Barring any unforeseen delays, Otto Bathurst’s period drama is undoubtedly the frontrunner to enter theaters first in 2018, and we fully expect to learn more in the coming weeks as Lionsgate’s redo begins to coalesce.

In light of today’s confirmation, Robin Hood: Origins will trot into theaters on March 23, 2018. Next up for Taron Egerton is action sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which is poised to shift the spy action Stateside on June 16, 2017.
