Borno State and large parts of neighboring states of northeast Nigeria are completely ruined by seven years of Boko Haram attacks and conflict between the Islamist group and security forces. The Nigerian military began a Boko Haram offensive in 2015 with the help of the armies of neighboring countries, but Boko Haram continues to regularly carry out sporadic attacks against remote villages and even in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.
Thousands of people are still in the hands of the group and at least 20,000 people have dead and 2.6 million displaced since 2009.
