Host Cameroon became the first team to
qualify for the semis after a hard fought 1-0 win over South Africa in their
Group A match on Tuesday in Yaounde. Substitute Genevieve Ngo Mbeleck scored the only goal of the match seven
minutes from time as the hosts romped to their successive win at the
tournament, and secure a place at the last four.
However, bad news for ‘Les Lionnes’ is
that hardworking midfielder Raissa
Feudjio was cautioned for the second time after the opener against Egypt
last Saturday, ruling her out of Friday’s ultimate group clash against
Zimbabwe.
The match started on a high note with
Banyana Banyana having the first chance at goal as early as the fourth minute.
The host responded immediately and it was Gaelle
Enganamouit and Gabrielle Aboudi
Onguene with efforts that missed target. Few minutes later, Enganamouit
fell in the South African half but her appeal for a penalty was not given by
Togolese referee Aissata Ameyo.
Cameroon coach Enow Ngachu brought on Ngo Mbeleck for Michele Ngono Mani on the hour mark and the former will later score
the only goal on 83 minutes to send the fans at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium into
ecstacy.
