A brace from the spot kick made sure Stephen Odey remains the top scorer in the NPFL as MFM FC secured a nervy 2-1 win against Rivers United in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League clash at the Agege Stadium in Wednesday. Two first half penalties from Odey gave MFM the win and increases his goals to 12 this season.
Rivers United's goal was scored by Emeka Ogbugh also in the first half. The win lifted MFM to the top of the league table on 27 points and two ahead of Plateau United who are now second.
MFM had the first chance of the game in the third minute through Adebayo Waheed but his low shot was parried away to corner by Sunday Rotimi. The game was halted for some minutes as a player from each side received medical attention.
In the 18th minute Stephen Odey went close to opening the score for MFM but his effort went narrowly over the bar. Lukman Mohammed went close for Rivers United in the 20th minute after good interchange of passes only to see his effort go over the bar. MFM took the lead on 29 minutes through leading scorer Odey from the penalty spot after Sikiru Olatunbosun was hacked down inside the box by Rivers skipper Cletus Austin. Rivers United drew level on 32 minutes thanks to Weli who finished off Bernard Ovoke's pass off a free-kick.
In the 46th minute of the first half Odey grabbed his second goal as he made it 2-1 from the penalty spot again after Brossa was brought down. With less than 20 minutes left the game was stopped as MFM's keeper Egbe was attended to by the medical team. Rivers went in search of the equaliser towards the end of the game but MFM held on to earn back to back wins.
