If you think Wizkid and Davido's lyrics are trash then you have 'Selective Amnesia'

My mind always gets boggled when I see social media comments that say Wizkid and Davido’s music is trash. I believe people who say this have selective amnesia. These people I am talking about are those older than 25 years who witnessed the beginning of the Afro-pop era.

As someone who is leaning towards 30 years of age, I can authoritatively state that I witnessed the beginning of Afro-pop. My father has been a long fan of Fuji and Apala music. His music archives are filled with Ayinde Barrister, Kollington, Haruna Ishola, Adewale Ayuba, and Saheed Osupa. Despite the fact that Fuji was the major sound in our home, my father still bought me new school (the late 90s and early 20s) music.

My father introduced me to music with records of Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem, Daddy Showkey, Awilo, etc. These were the maker of the sounds we boogie to in parties. On the streets, I found Plantashun Boiz and a few more others. Aside from Plantashun Boiz who had incredible records with powerful lyrics, all other sounds at the time were as ‘trash’ as the new Wizkid and Davido’s.

Thinking back at those hits like ‘My Car” by Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem’s ‘Lecturer’, I believed they all paved the way for the likes of Wizkid and Davido to come and thrive with ‘cheap’ lyrics. Can we now look at Nigeria’s Afro-Pop and blame Wizkid and Davido when they are only an improvement on what has been in the music industry for long?

If you jammed to Tony Tetuila, Eldee Tha Don, and others and you are of the belief that they were the biggest sounds in that era, then you have selective amnesia if you also think Davido and Wizkid are trash. The truth is that these youngsters are an upgrade of the sounds we have in that era.

Look at the biggest hits we have this year. From Davido’s ‘Fall’ and ‘If’ to Wizkid’s ‘African Bhad Gyal’ and ‘Sweet Love’, you can easily compare this to Weird MC’s ‘IjoYa’ or Olu Maintain’s ‘Yahooze’. No doubt, many of the old hit songs have empty lyrics just like the ones we have now, but Wizkid and Davido are not trash.

Many of you continue to say these duo and the likes of Tekno are trash, but you never listen to the artistes who actually show a lot of potential with their solid works. Many of you would not pay to go see Asa, Brymo, Timi Dakolo, Kiss Daniel, etc, but will dance to Wiz and OBO, yet they are trash to you.

What is not trash to you? Eedris Abdulkareem’s ‘Mr Lecturer’? Since we enjoyed the old guys, let’s learn to flow with the latest tides. Wizkid and Davido are not trash!
