Jo Konta dealt a huge blow to Great Britain's hopes of gaining
promotion to the upper levels of the Fed Cup competition when she pulled out of
the team at the eleventh hour on Sunday night.
The
Australian Open semi-finalist and British No 1 informed Captain Judy Murray of her decision with the
squad having already arrived in Israel in preparation for their Euro-Africa
zone matches beginning on Thursday. Konta was due to join up with the squad
direct from Australia but withdrew due to what she said were issues with her
intestines.
She made the
announcement via her management company saying “After having consulted with two doctors, my coach, physio and the LTA,
unfortunately I will have to withdraw from the upcoming Fed Cup in Israel. I
have been advised by the doctors that playing there would jeopardise an ongoing
intestinal issue that got progressively worse through the Australian Open. This
comes as a big disappointment to me and I regret not being able to play. I have
represented GB every time I have been asked to, and fully intend to play again
given the opportunity in the future”.
