Leonardo
DiCaprio‘s
long-awaited win for Best Actor generated more than 400,000 tweets per minute
on Sunday, becoming the most-tweeted moment in Oscar history, the social media
giant reported Sunday.
Twitter reported that this year’s most buzzed-about moments during the 88th
Academy Awards were led by DiCaprio’s win, followed by Spotlight winning Best
Picture at the end of the night and Mad Max: Fury Road winning its sixth
award for sound mixing.
The Revenant star’s triumph on his fifth nomination by far
surpassed the previous record for social engagement during an Academy Awards
telecast, which was previously set in 2014 with host Ellen DeGeneres‘ star-studded mid-show selfie.
Twitter also reported that DiCaprio (@LeoDiCaprio) was the most-discussed
star on the site during the ceremoy, followed by Chris Rock (@chrisrock), Lady
Gaga (@ladygaga), Sam Smith (@samsmithworld)
and Kate Winslet.
DiCaprio earned a standing ovation from the crowd at the Dolby Theatre for
his hard-earned win and opened his speech by thanking the cast, crew and
director Alejandro G. Iñárritu,
but his speech also included a call to action. He said “Climate change is real,” the actor said in a long speech that the
show’s producers decided not to cut short. It is happening right now. It is the
most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively
together and stop procrastinating.”
