Steve Bruce Confidence Of Getting Aston Villa Job

Steve Bruce says he is in the frame as Aston Villa's owner prepares to name the club's new manager on Wednesday. The former Birmingham boss has for days been a short-priced bookmakers' favourite to replace Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked this month after just 12 games in charge.

He said “All I can say is I think I'm in the frame, but until it's confirmed... I'm expecting a phone call tomorrow and we'll see how that goes. It's not agreed as such.” Bruce's list of previous employers includes Villa's bitter rivals, who are due to host the season's first Birmingham derby on October 30, and Dr Xia has called on supporters to stand together with the club when the new manager is identified.

Sean Dyche has also been prominent in the betting, but sources understand the Burnley manager is not interested in dropping back down to the Championship to take the job. Steve Clarke was placed in temporary charge following Di Matteo's departure, but the new boss should now be in charge for Saturday's live game against Wolves.
